Sudden Hearing Loss: What to Do if You Wake Up Unable to Hear
Imagine waking up one morning, reaching for your phone to play your favorite song, and realizing you can barely hear it in one ear. Your first thought might be “It’s probably just congestion” or “Maybe it’s ear wax.” While that is possible, there’s something more serious you should know about: Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSHL).
Here at Walker Hearing Clinics, we see patients every year who experience this situation.. The most important thing we want you to know? Time is absolutely crucial.
Don’t Wait and See
We understand the temptation to wait it out. After all, most of us have experienced temporary hearing changes with colds or allergies. But sudden hearing loss is different. This condition requires immediate medical attention – ideally within 48-72 hours of onset. The longer you wait, the lower your chances of recovery become.
“But I have a busy week ahead,” you might think. “I’ll just give it a few days.” We;ve seen this many times with patients who wait to come and see us. Unfortunately this means we lose precious treatment time and often recovery is not as good as it can be.
How to Know if It’s Serious
Sudden hearing loss often occurs in just one ear and can happen instantly or over a few hours. You might notice it when you wake up, or when you try to use the phone. Some people experience dizziness, fullness or a ringing sound (tinnitus). Others describe it as feeling like their ear is plugged. If you notice a sudden decline or loss of hearing in one or both ears, it is important to act fast. Early intervention is key for recovery.
What to Do Right Now
First things first: contact an audiologist or head straight to the emergency room. Don’t waste time with over-the-counter decongestants or home remedies. While these might help with congestion, they won’t address Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss and could cost you valuable treatment time.
At Walker Hearing Clinics, we offer emergency appointments for cases like these where possible. When you arrive, we’ll conduct a comprehensive hearing test and internal ear examination.
Recovery and Support
Recovery from sudden hearing loss varies significantly from person to person. Some patients recover completely within a few days of treatment, while others may have lasting hearing changes. That’s why we don’t just treat the immediate condition – we’re here to support you through the entire process.

If you or someone you know experiences sudden hearing loss, please don’t hesitate to contact us immediately. We understand how scary this situation can be, and our experienced team is here to help. Remember: when it comes to sudden hearing loss, it’s better to be overly cautious than to risk permanent damage.
