Should I Get a Custom or Non-Custom Hearing Aid?
Graham Walker
Choosing the right hearing aid is an important step toward better hearing and one of the biggest questions we hear at Walker Hearing Clinics is: “Should I choose a custom or a standard hearing aid?”
Both options can offer excellent results, but the best choice for you depends on your hearing needs, lifestyle, comfort preferences, and cosmetic considerations. In this post, we’ll walk you through the differences so you can feel confident and informed when making your decision.
Understanding the Two Types of Hearing Aids
Custom Hearing Aids
Custom hearing aids are moulded specifically to your ear. During your appointment, we take an impression of your ear canal so the device fits your ear shape perfectly.
Custom devices include in-the-ear (ITE) hearing aids. They are often very discreet, comfortable, and secure which makes them ideal for those who prefer a personalised fit.
Non-Custom Hearing Aids
Non-custom, or standard, hearing aids typically sit behind the ear (BTE) or use a receiver-in-canal (RIC) style. These are fitted using a range of domes that come in different sizes and shapes.
RIC/BTE hearing aids are the most widely used devices worldwide and offer exceptional sound quality, advanced features, and compatibility with Bluetooth and rechargeable options.
What Happens During Your Fitting?
After your hearing test, if you decide to go ahead with hearing aids, you’ll return to the clinic for your hearing aid fitting appointment.
During this appointment:
1. Your hearing aids are programmed uniquely to your hearing loss
Every patient’s hearing loss is different so this stage is where a skilled audiologist truly makes all the difference. Programming hearing aids correctly is a fine art that requires expertise, precision and clinical experience.
2. We use Real Ear Measurement (REMs)
At our CPC Clinic, we use Real Ear Measurement, the gold standard for accurate hearing aid fitting. REMs ensure:
Your hearing aids are programmed precisely for your prescription
You receive the correct level of amplification for speech
Maximum performance and comfort
This is the most reliable and scientifically validated method of assessing how well your hearing aids are working in your ear.
3. You’ll receive full training and guidance
We show you how to:
Insert and remove your hearing aids
Clean and care for them
Charge or change batteries
Use any additional features or apps
Good aftercare is essential for long-term success, which is why we spend time ensuring you feel confident and supported.
Custom vs Non-Custom: Which Should You Choose?
Choose Custom Hearing Aids If:
You want the most discreet option possible
You prefer something that fits entirely in your ear
You have narrow or difficult ear canals
You want a secure fit for active lifestyles
You prioritise comfort above all else
Choose Non-Custom (Standard) Hearing Aids If:
You want the most advanced features and latest technology
You prefer rechargeable hearing aids
You want strong performance in background noise
You would like Bluetooth streaming for calls and music
You want a device that is easy to handle and maintain
Our Recommendation at Walker Hearing Clinics
There is no one-size-fits-all answer. At Walker Hearing Clinics, we guide you through both options based on:
Your hearing test results
Ear canal shape and ear health
Lifestyle needs
Cosmetic preferences
Dexterity and handling ability
Budget and technology requirements
Because we are an independent hearing care provider, we offer a full range of brands and styles so you can choose what suits you.

At 88 years of age, I was a little nervous about getting hearing aids, but from the moment I walked into Walker Hearing I was treated with such kindness, patience, and understanding.

I would highly recommend Walker Hearing Clinics. The team are very friendly and accommodating. I had a doctors appointment in Cork, so they kindly arranged my appointment to fit in after that, explaining how to get there to avoid the queues.
