What to Expect During Your Hearing Test at Walker Hearing Clinics
Amy Walker
If you’ve noticed lately that conversations are becoming harder to follow or you’re turning up the TV volume more than usual, it might be time for a hearing test. At Walker Hearing Clinics, we understand that booking your first hearing test can feel a little daunting but we promise, it’s simple, comfortable, and often eye-opening.
Here’s exactly what to expect when you visit one of our state-of-the-art hearing clinics in Cork for your assessment.
A Warm Welcome & Patient History Review
Your appointment begins with a friendly chat. During your patient history review, one of our friendly clinical audiologists will take the time to understand your medical background and lifestyle, because hearing health is influenced by many factors.
We’ll discuss things like:
Past exposure to loud noise (in work or hobbies)
Any family history of hearing loss
Ear infections, medications, or illnesses such as viral measles
Ototoxic medications or previous ear conditions
This step helps your audiologist get a clear picture of your overall hearing health before any testing begins.
Visual Examination of the Ears
Next, we’ll perform a visual ear examination using an otoscope, endoscope, or microscope. This allows us to see right down to your eardrum and identify any visible issues, such as:
Earwax build-up (cerumen)
Infection, inflammation, or scarring
Signs of perforation, fluid, or swimmer’s ear
By looking at the eardrum, we can learn a lot about your middle and outer ear health before proceeding with diagnostic testing.
Comprehensive Diagnostic Hearing Tests
Once your ears are checked and clear, it’s time for the main part of the appointment: your hearing tests. At Walker Hearing Clinics, we use the latest equipment to perform a series of both subjective (patient-based) and objective (machine-based) tests to give a complete picture of your hearing function. These may include:
Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA)
You’ll wear comfortable headphones and press a button whenever you hear a tone. This simple test measures how softly you can hear sounds at different frequencies and determines the level of hearing in each ear.
Tympanometry
This middle ear test uses gentle air pressure to check how well your eardrum moves. It helps diagnose issues such as fluid, infection, or Eustachian tube dysfunction.
Speech Testing
We’ll play recorded words and phrases through your headphones and ask you to repeat what you hear. This measures how well you understand speech in both quiet and noisy environments.
Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE)
This painless test sends sound into your ear and measures the echo that bounces back. It evaluates the function of your inner ear’s tiny hair cells, and it’s actually the same test used for newborn hearing screening.
Results, Advice & Next Steps
Once testing is complete, your audiologist will review your results with you in clear, simple language. You’ll also receive a written report to share with your GP or ENT consultant if required.
From there, you’ll usually fall into one of three categories:
Hearing is within normal limits – no further action needed.
Hearing loss suitable for hearing aids – we’ll discuss suitable solutions and packages.
Hearing loss requiring ENT referral – if something unusual is detected, we’ll arrange a referral with your permission.
If hearing aids are recommended, as an independent hearing clinic in Cork, we offer a wide range of options from leading global brands, all with our comprehensive Four-Year Care Plan for aftercare and servicing.
